"It is a testimony of the power of social media. I was looking for a speaker for Latinas On The Plaza Annual Conference in 2014, who had some expertise in the leadership style of Latinas. I asked one of my connections who had posted about Dr. Damary Bonilla-Rodriguez' dissertation on Latina leadership (A Profile of Latina Leadership in the United States). I immediately read her full dissertation and asked him for an introduction. Dr. Bonilla-Rodriguez contacted me and we both agreed she would be the best keynote speaker for our conference in Chicago.
At the conference, Dr. Bonilla shared the results of the survey she had conducted as part of her dissertation research. We found that her survey results matched that of Latinas in Chicago with servant leadership as a common style of leadership. She was able to create a safe zone at the conference, evident by a line of women waiting to ask questions during the conference. With this event, we were one of the first in Chicago to put on full-day conference for Latina women in the Chicagoland area with speakers who were experts in their field."
